Your Community. Your Pace.
Distance learning doesn’t mean learning alone. At National Midwifery Institute, you balance independent, self-paced study with a vibrant, collaborative online ecosystem.
The self-paced and self-directed nature of the program's structure fits perfectly with my innate style of curiosity in learning.— An NMI Student
The Pacing & Flexibility
NMI offers open enrollment year-round. Our students complete coursework and clinical experience requirements at their own pace, tailored around their personal lives and logistics. All students maintain alignment with NMI's minimum academic and clinical progress policies via our supportive quarterly review system.
Distance Learning Infrastructure
Distance Learning affords you the opportunity to complete program requirements directly within your own community. While our format features no brick-and-mortar classrooms, you maintain daily access to a vibrant online community for connection, shared experience, and collaborative learning opportunities.
Students interact seamlessly with instructors and peers through our virtual study groups, private networks, and a comprehensive student portal. Complete student support services are always accessible via email, phone, and video conferencing.

Hive Mind Virtual Study Group
Participate in our twice-weekly Hive Mind sessions—dynamic virtual rooms facilitated by NMI Virtual Instructors via Google Meet. These student-driven spaces cover a wide range of topics found in the Study Group modules.
While sessions often focus in-depth on a particular midwifery module, past sessions have also addressed diverse topics such as business management, student/preceptor dynamics, and intentional self-care for working midwives. You can easily sign in using a computer, tablet, smartphone, or landline phone.
"Hive Mind is so valuable."
~ An NMI StudentStudent & Graduate Peer Networks
Enrolled students are highly encouraged to participate in NMI's private Facebook Group. This lively, curated discussion board is an active space to interact with other students and NMI instructors. It provides daily opportunities to share local resources, discuss challenging coursework, network across states, and discover study partners.
Lifelong Community: A separate, private Facebook Group is also maintained exclusively for NMI graduates, ensuring your professional support network remains intact long after certification.
"There was bonding with other NMI students both in person and online that I appreciated. This part actually kept me going and enabled me to finish my studies."
~ An NMI GraduateAcademic Advising & Tutoring Support
Whenever you need strategic guidance, you can connect directly with our Academic Directors. They will assist you in setting clear benchmarks, defining graduation goalposts, and creating highly personalized learning plans to match your ideal timeline.
Targeted Tutoring: If knowledge gaps are identified after you submit your modules, Coursework Instructors may recommend specific tutoring resources. Students can also independently request custom tutoring sessions at any point if they feel they need extra support with complex material.
The Online Student Management System (SMS)
The NMI Student Portal serves as your centralized digital campus. It houses everything required to manage your distance learning environment from a single dashboard:
📚 Academics & Coursework
Access all StudyGroup modules, mandatory reading lists, pre-recorded audio/video lectures, and web assets while interacting directly with your module instructors.
📊 Progress & Portfolios
Track your real-time academic progression, review personalized gradebooks, and manage your core clinical apprenticeship milestones.
🗂️ Systems & Identity
Update your student profile, customize preferred names and pronouns, manage billing data, and quickly review school calendars or staff directories.
🔬 Research Library
Gain full institutional access to DynaMed—a premium, evidence-based clinical database and point-of-care reference tool built for modern medical research.
Clinical Placement Support
Because NMI is a distance program, we do not directly place students with Preceptors. However, you are fully backed by institutional support. The NMI Clinical Director works one-on-one with you to identify potential preceptors in your geographic area, share lists of historic preceptors who have partnered with NMI students, and structurally guide you through securing an optimal clinical placement.
Additionally, NMI maintains an updated live list of apprenticeship opportunities on our public website and fast-tracks real-time postings directly into our private Student Facebook groups as soon as they reach our office.
Accountability: Quarterly Check-Ins
To keep you on track, NMI issues digital notifications during the third month of each quarter to complete your required Quarterly Check-In form. This form is designed to capture your real-time experience in the program, check your well-being, and fine-tune your learning strategy.
Following the review, our Directors follow up with a personalized status audit encompassing your academic progression, clinical records, and financial accounts, ensuring zero surprises on your road to graduation.
"The quarterly check-in process helps me re-assess my trajectory and review my approach the previous quarter... thereby giving me the information I need to move forward effectively."
~ An NMI StudentNARM Test Preparation
NMI offers one free comprehensive NARM Prep Test to all graduating students. Upon completion, the Academic Director or designated midwifery staff will personally review your specific responses and meet with you for up to an hour in a private 1:1 videoconference to provide targeted clinical review, pinpoint areas of focus, and build your testing confidence.
"I feel NMI is available always for any questions or concerns."
