A transparent, predictable, subscription-based model designed to keep you out of major student debt.
Our Subscription-Based Pricing
Unlike traditional universities that charge massive per-credit fees, NMI uses a subscription-based model. You pay a flat monthly rate only for the months you are actively enrolled.
Because NMI is flexible and self-paced, your overall financial investment is tied directly to your individual timeline: the faster you complete your academic modules and clinical hours, the less you pay overall. For the current tuition and fees policy see our Tuition & Fees Policy.
The Monthly Cost Breakdowns
To keep things simple, we bundle our base tuition and technology infrastructure fees into one predictable monthly invoice.
To continue supporting our digital learning infrastructure and global accreditation benchmarks, a planned rate adjustment will go into effect on July 6, 2026.
| Effective Timeline | Base Tuition | Tech & Continuation Fee* | Total Monthly Cost | Annual Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Current Rates | $575 / mo | $50 / mo | $625 / mo | $7,500 / yr |
| Effective July 6, 2026 | $575 / mo | $75 / mo | $650 / mo | $7,800 / yr |
*Students enrolled on custom payment plans before March 2022 will continue to follow their legacy agreements alongside updated access fees. Please reference the Student Handbook for full legacy structures.
🧩 How the Technology Fee Protects Your Enrollment ▼
Your monthly technology fee ensures constant access to the Student Portal, the NMI Clinical Tracking App, and your distance education dashboard.
If you take an approved Leave of Absence: Your $575 base tuition instantly pauses. Only the Technology & Continuation Fee remains active. This safely freezes your academic placement, maintains your secure portal access, and ensures you can step right back into your program smoothly when your leave ends without paying re-enrollment fees.
Estimating Your Total Investment
Most NMI students successfully complete their self-directed academic and clinical graduation requirements within 3.5 years.
Using our upcoming July 2026 rates, here is an estimated breakdown of total program tuition based on various completion paths:
The 3.5-Year Track (Average Finish): ~$26,250 total tuition
The 5-Year Track (Extended Pace): ~$37,500 total tuition
The 7-Year Track (Maximum Allowed Timeline): ~$52,500 total tuitionFunding & Financial Aid Policies
Additional Program Expenses to Budget For
Beyond NMI's subscription tuition, students are independently responsible for building their personal midwifery kit, setting up clinical accounts, and handling travel. These third-party costs are not paid directly to NMI.
| Expense Category | Estimated Cost | What It Covers / Crucial Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Required Certifications | $450 – $500 | Covers official **Basic Life Support (BLS/Adult CPR)** training ($50–$100) and your **Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)** clinical certification (up to $400). |
| Textbooks | $700 – $1,000+ | Required reference materials for coursework. Costs scale up if you choose to build out a robust physical lending library for your future clinical clients. |
| Midwifery Equipment | $4,000 – $8,000 | Building your independent professional clinical field kit before graduation. Total figures vary significantly based on your personal brand preferences, tools, and supply choices. |
| Apprenticeship & Licensing | Varies by State | Some jurisdictions require student midwives or apprentices to register formally with a state licensing agency. Private preceptor clinical fees are a separate agreement and vary by practice. |
| Travel & Transportation | Varies | Costs associated with reliable, immediate access to clinical birth settings. Most students should expect to possess and maintain their own vehicle during active clinical rotations. |
| Professional Memberships | $35 – $100 / ea | Optional but highly recommended annual student memberships to local state and national professional midwifery organizations. |
| NARM Credentialing | Varies | Third-party national administrative fees associated with your formal NARM certification application and taking the final NARM Written Examination. |
Please Note: These figures are external estimates based on current industry averages. These third-party costs are not collected by NMI and are not covered by standard payment plans or student loan options. We encourage students to research local resource costs before enrollment.
Funding & Financial Aid
Federal Financial Aid (Title IV)
National Midwifery Institute is intentionally not a Title IV school. Because we do not participate in the federal student loan system, NMI students are not eligible for federal financial aid or federal loan deferments, protecting our community from long-term institutional debt. As a result, NMI does not issue 1098-T tax forms.
Prepaid Tuition & Third-Party Scholarships
Lump Sum Payments: You are welcome to pay tuition in advance via lump-sum payments or through third-party grants. Funds are safely held on your account and drawn down month-by-month as they become due.
Pausing with Prepaid Funds: If you take an approved leave of absence, your remaining prepaid funds freeze on your account and will sit waiting for you until you return.
External Scholarships: NMI proudly accepts outside funding or scholarships. We regularly advertise independent scholarship opportunities directly to our active student network as they arise. Interested applicants may also want to check out NACPM’s Scholarship & Grants page for any opportunities they may qualify for.
Payment Security & Past Due Accounts
Invoices past due are subject to rolling late fees. To protect the financial integrity of our non-profit structure, accounts that maintain a past-due balance for two consecutive quarters will face standard programmatic suspension.Additional Expenses
National Midwifery Institute is a private institution approved to operate by California’s Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE). The State of California established the Student Tuition Recovery Fund (STRF) to protect eligible students from economic losses if a qualifying institution closes unexpectedly or experiences a major decline in quality.
