Minimum Requirements for Correspondence Learning
When participating in distance education, it is vital to consider the technology needed in order to have a successful education. We recommend that you meet the technical requirements below.
Before you enroll read about the technological requirements and process. NMI is a correspondence program and you will need to be self-directed. NMI staff and instructors will support you on your journey but ultimately you must be prepared to do the work.
Required Hardware
A computer (desktop/laptop) or chromebook (smartphone/tablet) that is less than 5 years old will work.
Optional Hardware
Speakers/headphones/earbuds for listening to audio or videos presented in courses.
Webcam for interacting in zoom virtual groups.
Required Software
The following software is required :
An Internet Browser, such as Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome preferred. (See Internet Browser section for more information.)
Adobe Acrobat Reader (latest version) - Download.
Optional Software
Microsoft Office (includes Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
if you don’t have Microsoft office, work can be completed using Google Docs, or Apple Pages.
Internet Connection
A stable Internet connection is required. Some modules require accessing online sources to complete.
You will need to be able to email coursework to instructors and access the NMI Student Portal.
Online meetings are hosted on Zoom. Participates can access using computers or phone.
Internet Browser(s)
Various browsers may be able to access the Student Portal. We recommend the following tips:
Use the latest versions of Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome. (Please note that eLearning (TAMIU's learning management system) may not be fully compatible with the latest versions of each browser.)
NOTE: Do not use Internet Explorer. This browser is obsolete and is no longer supported by Blackboard.
Be sure to properly configure your Internet browser. (Please note that Mozilla Firefox is the university-preferred browser. To download Firefox, please visit http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/.)
