National Midwifery Institute is a long-standing MEAC-accredited midwifery program training midwifery students in academic and clinical experiences necessary to seek the Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) credential. Founded in 1995, NMI has a rich history in midwifery education and adapting to modern needs of our distance-education students.

 
  • Shannon Anton and Elizabeth Davis co-found the Midwifery Institute of California (later to become National Midwifery Institute, Inc.).

  • Midwifery Institute of California applies to be part of Midwifery Education Accreditation Council (MEAC)’s accreditation pilot program. Pre-accreditation is granted in 1996.

1995


  • Midwifery Institute of California celebrates its first three graduates.

  • The program relocates to Vermont and renames as National Midwifery Institute, Inc.

2000


  • National Midwifery Institute, Inc. is accredited by the Midwifery Education Accreditation Council (MEAC)

  • First student graduates from National Midwifery Institute, Inc.

2002


  • National Midwifery Institute is approved as a route to licensure for aspiring midwives in California.

2003


  • National Midwifery Institute Challenge Process for California Midwifery Licensure is approved by the California Medical Board. Over fifty midwives complete the NMI Challenge Mechanism before the program is suspended in 2014 due to legislative changes.

2006


  • NMI launches National Midwifery Institute’s Virtual Study Group, meeting weekly online.

2017


  • Study Group Course Work undergoes a major update with all modules re-drafted. Each module enters a regular review process going forward.

  • NMI transitions to a new Academic Director and hires its first Clinical Director.

2018


  • NMI transitions to a new Executive Director and hires an Equity Consultant.

  • NMI launches the Clinical Tracking App, digitizing all student clinical experience submissions

  • In response to the COVID-19 Pandemic, Heart and Hands is offered in a virtual format for the first time. Correspondence versions of Heart & Hands continue, in-person courses are temporarily suspended.

  • Virtual Study Group is renamed “Hive Mind” and increases frequency offering virtual gatherings to discuss module topics twice per week.

  • Guest Speaker Series is launched at NMI, featuring monthly speakers on midwifery-related topics. This series is open to NMI students and the public.

2020


  • NMI transitions to a new Academic Director and hires a Director of Innovation.

  • NMI launches the National Midwifery Institute Honeycomb groups to better support students in their paths at NMI.

  • NMI hired a new Executive Director

2021


  • NMI transitioned to a subscription tuition model.

  • Heart & Hands transitioned out of the curriculum and NMI added pre-requisites to support student retention and completion.
